Workstation Password Reference Guide Password requirements: Minimum Password Length = 16 charactersMinimum number of characters required for a password – can be up to 127 Maximum Password Age = 365 daysMaximum number of days that a password can be used - regular expiration Minimum Password Age = 30 daysMinimum number of days before a password can be changed - prevents reuse Password History = 3 passwordsNumber of unique new passwords needed before reuse of an old one is allowed Password Complexity = Enabled Passwords may not contain the user’s Account Name value or entire displayName The password must contain characters from three of the following categories: Uppercase letters Lowercase letters Numbers Special characters (~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|\(){}[]:;”’<>,.?/) Strong passwords are recommended for maximum security of MEI information. They are at least 16 characters long and consist of at least three of the character classes in the previous section.Create passwords based on a phrase (song title, affirmation, activity, etc…) only YOU can recall How to change your password: Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete together and then click on “Change a password…” Enter your old password Enter your new password and then again to confirm it Wait about 2 minutes, then log out and log back in using new password If you use the Outlook app on your phone for company e-mail, it will update automatically, otherwise you will need to change your password on the e-mail app you are using as well. Changing passwords on smartphone e-mail app other than Outlook:Once you have changed your password on your workstation, wait 2-5 minutes and refresh your inbox on your phone. It should prompt you to enter your (new) password in order to retrieve messages from the Exchange server. Reminder messages will be sent 14, 7 and 3 days prior to password expiration You will NOT be able to change your password when working remotely out of the office Make sure to plan when to change your password so you don’t get locked out of your account Account will lock for 30 minutes after the 10th or last unsuccessful log in attempt whichever is later The number of attempts includes when your phone or workstation is attempting to log onto the MEI_DATA Wi-Fi network or your smartphone is trying to download e-mail messages If you need your account unlocked, call IT Workstations will automatically lock after 15 minutes of inactivity and go into screen saver mode Always remember to lock your workstation when unattended or leaving the office for a periodQuick ways to lock workstation account: Hold down the Windows key while pressing “L” – either case Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select “Lock this computer” or click Enter Logging into and using another workstation: At the log in screen, click Other Credentials → Switch User → Other User Log in with your User name: firstname.lastname and Password: yourpassword Make sure to logoff when done using the other workstation You will have access to the programs on that machine and your network drives You will not have access to the person’s “My Documents” folder or Outlook messages A separate folder can be created on the C: drive of the workstation to share between users Use webmail if e-mail access is necessary: https://mail.mooreengineeringinc.com/owa Safeguarding your password - NEVER: Share passwords with anyone, including IT staff Write down your password or store online Use any part of your username within a password Reveal a password in e-mail, chat or other communication Speak about a password in front of others Hint at the format of a password to others Reveal a password on questionnaires or security forms Restart or Shut down your computer daily when possible but no less than once weekly to ensure consistent performance and timely updates to the workstation and its programs If you forget your password, get locked out of your account, suspect a password or userID is compromised, have lost your device, or are changing job title/function, contact the IT Help Desk Staff
